Self-Medicating

Self-medicating refers to attempts to cope with sadness, mental or physical pain, or extreme emotions by using medications, alcohol, and other substances. People may use drugs or alcohol as coping mechanisms when they are lonely, suffering from anxiety, depression, stress or may be overcoming boredom.

Drinking or the misuse of drugs can result in temporary pleasurable sentiments and relaxation. Nevertheless, more problems develop when people continue to use drugs or alcohol to cope with its effects. Do you believe you could be self-medicating? If so, do you know why?

There are healthy and more effective methods to deal with life's obstacles, and a better understanding of why and when you self-medicate can help you improve your overall mood and general well-being.
